Associate Professor Dr. Basanta Maharjan is a distinguished orthopaedic surgeon with specialised expertise in hand and reconstructive microsurgery, musculoskeletal oncology, complex trauma, and limb-salvage surgery. His practice integrates advanced surgical techniques with a multidisciplinary approach to restoring limb function, reconstructing complex defects, and improving outcomes for patients with challenging musculoskeletal conditions. He holds an MBBS degree from Kathmandu Medical College and an MS in Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery from the National Academy of Medical Sciences, Nepal. He subsequently completed a Fellowship in Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgery at the National University Hospital, Singapore, followed by the Asia Pacific Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand (APFSSH) Traveling Fellowship at the Saitama Hand and Microsurgery Centre, Japan. Dr. Maharjan has a particular interest in the surgical management of bone and soft-tissue tumours, limb-salvage procedures, and oncoplastic reconstruction following tumour resection. His expertise encompasses complex hand and wrist injuries, tendon and nerve reconstruction, vascular repair, local and free-flap reconstruction, and functional restoration following major trauma or oncological surgery. His approach emphasises not only tumour clearance and limb preservation but also the restoration of meaningful function and quality of life. He serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics at KIST Medical College and Teaching Hospital and as a Consultant Orthopaedic, Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgeon at Nepal Cancer Hospital and Research Centre. Alongside his clinical practice, he is actively engaged in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, surgical skills training, clinical research, and the development of specialised orthopaedic services. A founding member of the Nepal Hand Surgery Society, Musculoskeletal Oncology Society of Nepal (MOSON), and Team SARC Nepal, Dr. Maharjan contributes to advancing hand surgery, musculoskeletal oncology, and multidisciplinary cancer care in Nepal. His research and academic contributions focus on musculoskeletal tumours, reconstructive procedures, functional outcomes, and context-appropriate surgical innovations. His professional training and international academic engagements across Singapore, Japan, Canada, Indonesia and South Korea reflect his commitment to continuous learning, international collaboration, and bringing advanced surgical knowledge and techniques to Nepal. His clinical philosophy centres on achieving oncologically sound surgery, preserving limbs whenever feasible, and maximising functional recovery through thoughtful reconstruction and patient-centred care.
