Dr. Kapendra Shekhar Amatya is a highly accomplished Surgical Oncologist with more than 17 years of experience in the field of cancer surgery. After completing his medical education at Beijing University in 2004, he began his career at BP Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital, Bharatpur, where he worked for over four years as a Registrar and Junior Consultant in Surgical Oncology. He later joined Bhaktapur Cancer Hospital, dedicating more than seven years there, where he played an instrumental role in establishing the Surgical Oncology Department. He is widely credited for pioneering several advanced surgical techniques in Nepal, including Oncoplastic Breast Surgery for breast cancer, orthotopic neobladder reconstruction for urinary bladder cancer, laparoscopic surgical services, and complex pelvic exenterations (anterior, posterior, and total). Dr. Amatya is highly regarded for his expertise in performing D2 gastrectomies for stomach cancer, extended colectomies for colon cancer, TME for rectal cancer, and Whipple’s procedures for pancreatic and duodenal cancers. Over his career, he has managed an impressive volume of cancer cases, having treated more than 1,000 cases of breast cancer, 400 cases of stomach cancer, 300 cases of colon and rectal cancers, and 250 cases of urinary bladder and kidney cancers, along with many other complex oncologic procedures. He has also undergone specialized training in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery in Thailand and Laparoscopic Gastric Cancer Surgery in South Korea, further enhancing his surgical expertise. In addition to his clinical achievements, Dr. Amatya has made significant contributions to academic research, with numerous publications in national and international journals. His works include studies on surgical care in Nepal, quality of life among breast cancer patients, outcomes of radical cystectomy, and novel surgical techniques in urologic oncology. He has also co-authored a book chapter in Operation Crisis: Surgical Care in the Developing World during Conflict and Disaster, published by Johns Hopkins University Press. Dr. Amatya is also an active member of several professional organizations. He is a Life Member of the SAARC Federation of Oncologists Nepal, a Member of the Asian Clinical Oncology Society, and a Member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). Through his pioneering work, vast surgical experience, and academic contributions, Dr. Kapendra Shekhar Amatya has established himself as one of Nepal’s foremost surgical oncologists, dedicated to advancing cancer care and improving outcomes for patients.
