Every life has been directly or indirectly affected by cancer. Some lost the battle against it, some are fighting it, some survived it and some are supporting those who are fighting and those who survived. The fight against cancer is one of the most daunting challenges faced by people all around the world, and Nepal is no exception.

However, in a low-resource country like ours, building the infrastructure and preparing human resources to battle against cancer has not been a priority and quality of care is being compromised.

According to the World Health Organization, by 2020, there will be an expected 15 million new cancer cases every year, with almost 60% of these new cases occurring in less developed parts of the world like ours. Nepal Cancer Hospital & Research Center is our effort to prepare the country for this inevitability. As the first comprehensive cancer center established by the private sector to provide affordable and international level of quality care to patients and families  from all around Nepal, the hospital focuses not just on treatment, but also on preventive oncology, palliative oncology, education and research on cancer. Our approach to cancer management is holistic and comprehensive, with the total treatment plan decided by a multidisciplinary team of experts. Together with the medical issues, we also take into consideration the psycho-social, financial, and religious need of the patient and families, and focus on all dimensions of care, from preventative to palliative.

For example, our onco-genetics team counsels on the hereditary aspects of cancer so that patients and families are equipped for prevention and early diagnosis.  Our psycho-oncology team makes sure that patients’ families are given proper psycho-oncological care. The breast care clinic provides comprehensive care of any breast diseases, while the survivorship clinic takes care of different issues of cancer survivors during and after the treatment of the cancer. Our trained dietitian looks after patient nutrition, while the clinical pharmacologist will ensure the patient’s complex pharmaceutical prescriptions are correct.

Our strong, well trained medical team has provided us expertise to achieve our goal of becoming a center of excellence for cancer. This is enhanced by our state-of-the-art facilities and doctors. Our world class radiation oncology facility is capable of very accurate, advanced radiotherapy treatment; our highly trained and well equipped surgical oncology team can perform sophisticated cancer surgery. With the best diagnostic services both in radiology and laboratory services, we leave no stone left upturned for the diagnosis of any cancer.

Our focus on bringing the best technology and expertise to our patients extends to other areas of the hospital too. Our high tech paperless hospital information system enhances our working capabilities, our dedicated research department works on new insights into different aspects of oncology in Nepal; from epidemiology to clinical. Similarly, our expertise is continuously enhanced by our participation in cancer care networks inside the country and abroad.

Since its early days, the center has been striving to set the standard of cancer care in our country while teaching the next generation of providers. With a clear vision, committed staff, and state-of-the-art facilities we are well on our way to becoming a nationally preeminent cancer center and to generate new knowledge that helps us not just to cure cancer today, but to prevent it in the next generation.

We also aim to join hands with other partners working to address the cancer problem in Nepal, including the Nepal Government, so we can strengthen cancer care in the country and bring healing and hope to all who are affected by cancer.
