Harisiddhi, Lalitpur. On the 30th of March, 2018, Nepal Cancer Hospital and Research Center (NCHRC) organized an interaction program on Antimicrobial Stewardship and Infection Prevention and Control. The event was managed by the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Committee at NCHRC with guest speaker Prof. Dr. Reetu Baral, the Dean of Rapti Academy of Health Sciences and an Infection Prevention and Control Physician.
The interaction program hosted doctors, nursing supervisors, nursing officers, representatives from the hospital administration, pharmacy, the infection prevention and control committee and members of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (ASP) team.
Prof. Dr. Reetu baral conducted two very interactive and informative sessions. The first focused on Antimicrobial stewardship, including detailed description of its importance, elements, development, implementation and roles of the ASP team and different other bodies within the hospital. An ASP is a vital measure for impeding the rate of antimicrobial resistance. NCHRC has formed a multidisciplinary ASP team (supported by the IPC committee and hospital administration) which has begun initial work for antimicrobial stewardship.
The second session focused on the importance of hand hygiene and its role in preventing hospital acquired infections. NCHRC has a dedicated IPC committee and team and an effective IPC policy aimed at preventing and containing infections with strong commitments towards elements such as hand hygiene and IPC education so as to improve patient care.
Besides being a leading cancer center, NCHRC is committed towards continuing training and education. This event is one of several such educational sessions held at NCHRC aimed at enhancing practices in infection prevention and control.
